No need to feel overwhelmed by these, even if you’re new to the sport of horse racing! First things first: an “overnight” is a track’s schedule of upcoming races. It’s based on trainer’s entries, and is released by the racing secretary 24-72 hours prior to a specific race day. Below is our helpful guide to reading and understanding overnight entries!

  • Race number
  • Post time
  • Purse (a reference to the total amount of money dedicated to being paid out to the top finishers of a particular race)
  • Conditions (specific record, gender and/or age of horses competing)
Top Right
  • Type of race (claiming, optional claiming, allowance) and fixed price each horse is offered for sale
  • Distance of race
Main Body (Left to Right)
  1. Horses are listed by gate post position
  2. Horse name
  3. Year foaled (age)
  4. Gender (Mare, filly, colt, gelding, etc)
  5. Claim price, if any (horse’s sale price)
  6. Weight the horse will carry
  7. Name of jockey
  8. Name of owner
  9. Name of trainer
